It was during the Occupation that engineer Fernand Picard was commissioned by Louis Renault to design a small, inexpensive car suited to the postwar shortages. Influenced by the German KdF (the future Volkswagen “Beetle”), Picard developed a rear-engine car, which was unusual at the time. The 4CV, unveiled at the 1946 Paris Motor Show -modern, sturdy, and economical- would become a symbol of the freedom to get around and travel. Its successors would be the Dauphine and then the R8.
